Rohan Woods - Day 1

Greeting us this morning at the residences were the smiling faces of Rohan Woods Grade 5 and 6 students.  They had a long day of travel from St. Louis, Missouri yesterday and arrived late but got a bit of rest and were ready and excited for the day.

Today we rotated the students through the plankton lab and going out on our research vessel, the Fundy Spray.  While in the lab the students played plankton bingo to become familiar with the organisms that make up the base of the marine food chain.  Out on the boat the students got to collect plankton, conduct a scallop drag to bring up animals from the bottom of the ocean, and gather data on the water temperature and salinity.  We collected lots of animals such as sea stars, urchins, crabs, and sea peaches while on the boat to study later in the week.

To finish off the afternoon the group had a tour of the Fundy Discovery Aquarium, which features animals found in the Bay of Fundy, such as harbour seals, skates, lobsters, and many species of fish and invertebrates.  The students enjoyed watching the seals have their supper, as well as, spending time getting their hands wet in the touch pools.

It was a wonderful first day!
