Ottawa Catholic Schools 2017

Last week on campus we welcomed six schools from the Ottawa Catholic School Board. Schools from this board have been coming to the Huntsman for 27 years!

It was a busy week of marine biology with an overnight trip to Grand Manan Island to learn about island industries and go whale watching on the Bay of Fundy.

Below are a few pictures from the week.

Using the microscopes to learn about plankton.

Freshly collected zooplankton and phytoplankton.

Different species of phytoplankton through the microscope.

Collecting plankton onboard the research vessel, the Fundy Spray.

Sorting through the benthic invertebrates.

A beautiful spiny sunstar was collected.

Enjoying the sunshine!

A very large common sea star was collected from the bottom.

Experiencing the tides.

Closer observation of the live animals in the lab.

A blood star and a sea anemone.

Exploring the intertidal zone at low tide.

Lots of sea stars, urchins, worms and green crabs were found under the rocks.

Getting a lesson in sea urchin external anatomy.

Lobster 101 with Captain Peter on Grand Manan Island.

The last day students conduct behaviour experiments.

Such as testing if size effects the flipping rates of sea urchins and sea stars.

Testing how different crabs react to light.

Does temperature effect the feeding rate of barnacles?
