All Things Marine - Spring

At the end of May we offered for the first time a spring version of our All Things Marine family field course. It was a great success with families joining us from New Brunswick and the US. It was a mixture of homeschool and non-homeschool families. The linking factor was an interest in exploring and learning more about the ocean.

As you can see by the photos we had wonderful weather for exploring the Bay. Some of these photos were taken by a participant that graciously shared with us. Thank you, Skip!

On our research vessel, the Fundy Spray.

Pulling in the benthic drag.

Having a look at the animals collected from the bottom of the bay.

A great diversity, including different species of sea stars.

Exploring a rocky shore at low tide.

We found lots of animals hiding under rocks, including these sea urchins.

Tiny sea stars.

Terebellid worm.

Preparing seaweeds to be pressed.

Low tide on a muddy beach.

We found lots of sand dollars.

Moon snail egg collars.

Searching for invasive green crabs.

Gathering data on size and gender before being marked and released.

We had a great time introducing the participants to the Bay of Fundy and St. Andrews by-the-Sea. We look forward to our next All Things Marine family field course which will be taking place August 7-10. Our field courses are all-inclusive and cover accommodations, meals, a tour of the Fundy Discovery Aquarium, instructional fees, boat and lab rental, and taxes.

  1. This was the most amazing trip! I had fun, I made friends, and I learned all about life on the Bay! I liked going outside to the field and doing the experiments in the lab. I am 11 and I went with my Mom and Grandfather.
