Young Explorer Day - Lobster 2018

Yesterday was the first Young Explorer Day of the summer at the Fundy Discovery Aquarium. Through out the day the children learned about lobsters and other local marine arthropods including hermit crabs, rock crabs, green crabs, toad crabs, sideswimmers and barnacles. The children had lots of hands-on time with the live animals, made a barnacle craft, toured the aquarium, enjoyed the touch tank, played a crab survival game, explored the beach and played a lobster claw game. It was a great day with a great group! Here are a few pictures from our day.

Marine arthropod show and tell.

A special half-and-half lobster.

Hands on time with the animals. Note the different colours on the tail of the lobster.

Exploring the beach.

The students found lots of crabs of all sizes.

Learning how to hold a crab safely.

They also learned to tell the difference between a male and female crab. This one is female.

The theme for next Wednesday's program is Microscopic Life. Students will learn to use microscopes and explore the life in a drop of seawater.
