Lower Canada College 2019

Last week on campus we had Grade 12 students from Lower Canada College that travelled from Montreal to learn about the marine environment of the Bay of Fundy. Below are a few photos from their stay in St. Andrews.

The students went on the Huntsman research vessel, the Fundy Spray, to collect marine specimens and oceanographic data.

Zooplankton and phytoplankton samples collected by the students.

Identifying and drawing plankton species from the sample.

View through the microscope at 40x.

View through the microscope at 100x.

Classification lab using live marine invertebrates.

This scallop caused quite a stir in the lab with it movement. Plus look at all those eyes!

Creating a dichotomous key for seaweeds.

On the shore at low tide.

Gathering data on the seaweed and animals living in the intertidal zone.

Whale watching trip with Quoddy Link Marine.

We got to see North Atlantic Right Whales! This was a special experience as these whales are endangered, with a population of only about 400.

Individual right whales can be identified by the callosities on their heads.

Puffins!

We also got great views of basking sharks! These are the second largest fish on the planet and they eat tiny food by filter feeding. We also saw fin whales, a minke whale, bald eagles, harbour and grey seals, and porpoises.

Basking shark head through the water. Can you see the gill slits?

While here the students also worked on independent projects.
