Young Explorers 2020 - Seals

Yesterday was Seal Day at the Aquarium for the Young Explorers. Along with learning about seals we explored the intertidal zone and toured the Aquarium. Check out some photos from our fun day.

Exploring the intertidal zone during low tide.

Searching for live animals under the rocks and seaweed.

The Young Explorers found lots of green crabs of all sizes.

The Young Explorers learned how to hold the crabs properly so as not to get pinched.

We also had a look at the tail, tucked under the crab to help us determine if the crabs were female (wide, curved tail) or male (triangle with straight sides).

We watched the seal feeding! This is Snorkel; he turned 14 this year.

We toured the Aquarium and had a chance to see the seals and a variety of fish and invertebrates from the Bay of Fundy.

Loki lounging after lunch.

Learning about the adaptations that seals have to live in their habitat. Can we make Conner into a seal? (Conner is also helping out with the SCAMPS program this summer with Sunbury Shores and Kingsbrae Garden. Registration is available online.)

Conducting an experiment to learn about the freezing point of saltwater.

Aquarium scavenger hunt!
