Simonds High School

The campus and aquarium were very busy today with four different groups participating in tours and labs.  One of the groups visiting campus today was 18 grade 9 students from Simonds High School.  When they first arrived they were whisked through the aquarium down to the wet lab to learn about plankton, which is at the base of the marine food chain.  The students used microscopes to the view fresh plankton that had been collected from Passamaquoddy Bay by the Huntsman research vessel.  They saw lots of different species of phytoplankton and zooplankton, including sea cucumber and jellyfish larvae.  They had lots of fun taking pictures of their plankton and showing the other students what they saw on their slides.

To finish their visit they had a tour of the aquarium.  The students especially enjoyed getting to touch all of the invertebrates and the skates in the two touch pools and viewing the harbour seals, Snorkel and Loki.

Below are some pictures from their visit.

Viewing a sea cucumber larvae under the microscope.

Taking pictures of their finds.

Looking at a shark jaw in the aquarium.
