Biodiversity Week Mini-Course

Today I had a wonderful group of 5 girls join me for our Wednesday summer program.  We started out the morning with a scavenger hunt to find animals with helpful appendages, such as fins, spines, tentacles, and suction cups.  They girls did great and were excited to receive their sticker prize!  Then we all changed into our rubber boots so we could explore the beach (intertidal zone).  We had lots of fun and found all sorts of interesting animals, including a comb jelly, sideswimmers, and numerous crabs.  Back in the lab the girls sorted out their finds and made a field guide of all the animals and specimens they collected.  They even got to show off their finds to some aquarium visitors who wondered into the lab.  To finish off the morning they each received their certificate, a painted sand dollar, a guide to the intertidal zone, and a Huntsman Activity Colouring Book to take home.
