Introduction to Marine Biology – Day 1

Today we welcomed to campus eleven high school students from across Canada and some from Britain that are participating in our Introduction to Marine Biology field course.  The students will be with us for the week having fun and learning about the local marine environment.

Upon arrival this afternoon the students got settled into their rooms at Anderson House (pretty nice!), had a quick introduction with Tracey, Barb and I, and then headed down to the beach in all of their shiny new rubber boots.  Even though the tide was chasing us off the beach we still found some interesting animals to take back to the lab including green crabs, sideswimmers, periwinkles, barnacles and mussels.  We also found some squid eggs, jellies and sea urchin tests.  It was beautiful and sunny with a nice breeze so wonderful for exploring the intertidal zone!

After putting their creatures in the lab tanks the group toured the aquarium.  They got to see Snorkel and Loki, the harbour seals have their supper, play in the touch pool with the sea stars and skates, and see the different coloured lobsters.  They even got a behind the scenes tour to see the octopus, turtles, snake, and frogs that will soon be on display in the aquarium.

Supper was delicious spaghetti, garlic bread, caesar salad and chocolate cupcakes!  Yum!

The evening involved a plankton lab to view what lives in a drop of water, a crazy game of Frisbee, and a movie night with the whole group.

Tomorrow we will take a closer look at some of the animals that we collected on the beach today.  Good night all!
