Earl of March and West Carleton – Day 4

Yesterday the students spent the day exploring Grand Manan Island.  First they visited with Peter, the Captain from the whale watching boat.  He is also a lobster fisherman so he and his assistant Steven, showed the students all the lobster traps they are preparing for the fishing season.  The students got to ask questions and learned lots about the lobster industry on Grand Manan.

Next the group went to Anchorage Park where the students did a scavenger hunt on the long, sandy beach.  They had to find a long piece of kelp, a gastropod shell, a crab shell, and two pieces of garbage from the lobster industry (rope, claw elastics, etc).  The students had lots of fun exploring the beach and all of them completed the scavenger hunt.

The next stop on the tour was the dulse shop.  This shop is a family owned facility where different types of seaweed that have been harvested on the shorelines of the island are processed and sold.  The students were able to sample many types of seaweeds including dulse and nori.  There weren’t many that enjoyed the taste of the seaweeds.  I guess it is an acquired taste!

After lunch at the marshes the group visited the Swallowtail lighthouse, while they waited for the ferry to arrive.  On the ferry many of the students were able to have a tour of the wheelhouse and meet the captain.

It was a great trip to the island, one the students won’t soon forget!
