Earl of March and West Carleton – Final Day

Today the students completed behaviour experiments using the invertebrates they collected while on the Fundy Spray at the first of the week.  Some of the experiments the students worked on included the effect of temperature on the feeding rate of barnacles, the flipping rate of sea stars and sea urchins with relation to size, and the effect that light has on different crab species.  The students enjoyed working with the live animals and got some great results from their experiments.

After lunch the students had a bell ringer quiz to see just how much knowledge they retained from their week of immersion into marine biology.  While they were working on the quiz I cleaned out the tanks and some of the students helped take a few of the animals to the touch pool before the rest were released into the bay.

Currently the students are taking some time on this beautiful day to explore the town of St. Andrews and pick up some souvenirs.  I am sure there will be some crisp new St. Andrews t-shirts being sported next week at Earl of March and West Carleton!

This evening after a big feed of lobsters the group is boarding their bus for the trip back to Ontario. Thank you for a wonderful week!  Hope to see you all again in the future!

Watching the acrobatic sea stars.

Which barnacles are we working with?

Ready to time the flipping sea urchin...ready, set, go!
