Quispamsis Middle School – Ocean Discovery

For the past four days grade 6 students from Quispamsis Middle School have been visiting the Huntsman to take part in the Ocean Discovery Program.  While the students find the hands-on activities in the program fun and engaging the teachers enjoy the program because it meets all but a few of the curriculum outcomes for New Brunswick’s grade 6 science Diversity of Life Unit.

During the visit to the Huntsman the students have explored the intertidal zone, viewed plankton using microscopes, conducted a behaviour experiment with echinoderms, and worked with arthropods and other marine invertebrates up close.  Some of the highlights for the students have been finding green crabs on the beach, getting squirted by a scallop (surprise!), and being amazed by the life found in one drop of water.

It has been a great four days filled with excitement and learning!

What's under this rock?

  2. Thank you for your question. The answer is that it would depend on the type of zooplankton. For example, some zooplankton are eggs of fish or invertebrates. Other zooplankton such as copepods will carry eggs in sacs on their body.
