St. Stephen Middle School (part 3)

Yesterday Genny and I visited St. Stephen Middle School to complete the activities for the Grade 6 Ocean Discovery Program.  I worked with the English classes, while Genny worked with the French immersion students.  The immersion students conduct the majority of their program in French with Genny teaching them the names of the animals and many of the scientific terms in both English and French.

During the follow-up visit to SSMS the students conducted an experiment to see if size affects the flipping rate of sea stars and urchins.  They really enjoyed this behaviour experiment and being able to see how the echinoderms moved firsthand!  The students also completed activities to understand how scientists study the ocean environment, including a discussion of the Huntsman’s ROV.

Thank you to the students and teachers at SSMS, we hope that you all enjoyed the program and learned lots about marine life in the Bay of Fundy!

Measuring the diameter of the urchin.

Wow, that sea star is quite the contortionist!

Learning that the urchin won't hurt you.
