Turner Fenton Secondary School – Day 5

This morning the students awoke to something they had only glimpsed briefly since they arrived at the Huntsman, the sun!  They had a lovely, beautiful sunny day to bring their Huntsman trip to an end.

To start the day the students arrived in the lab all sporting their Huntsman t-shirts, which was a great sight!  In the lab they conducted behaviour experiments with the animals they had been collecting all week.  The students each did one of three different experiments: temperatures effect on the feeding rate of barnacles, the strength of echinoderm tube feet, and the reaction to light by arthropods.  The students did great and learned the intricacies and excitement of working with live animals.  Sometimes they don’t always do what you want or expect!

After having breakfast food for lunch (yum!) the students walked to the beach to hunt for the invasive green crab.  They were helping us to collect data on the size and gender of the local green crab population.  The students did wonderful, collecting and marking over 300 crabs in just a couple of hours.  Quite a few of those are thanks to Mr. Carter in group B and one of the female students from group C who are both designated as ‘crab whisperers’!

Tonight the students from Turner Fenton and Glenforest Secondary School will board the bus to head home to Ontario.  Thank you all for a fantastic week!  Farewell and safe travels!

Echinoderms all harnessed up and ready to go...which will be the strongest?

Who's afraid of the light?

Can you eat with your feet?  Barnacles do.

The hunt is on!

Pretty red polish for the girls...and the boys!
