I woke up excited today because I got to work with students in the lab for our first summer day program at the new aquarium! This morning the students had lots of fun making their own slides and looking at plankton under the microscopes. They found lots of different species including copepods (thing Plankton from SpongeBob but microscopic). After learning about plankton the students ventured up to the touch pool to see and feel some of the animals that feed directly on plankton, including sea peaches, scallops, and sea cucumbers. The last activity of the morning found us outside pretending to be right whales, mussels, moon jellies, and barnacles trying to feed on zooplankton (bubbles!). The students quickly realized how difficult it was to feed when you are a mussel or a barnacle waiting for your food to float past; much easier to be a right whale that can go in search of your food!
Thanks to the students who attended this morning, you were all excellent! See you again soon!
