Laval Liberty - Day 2

Yesterday the students awoke to a beautiful sunny day and headed out early for a full day of activities, including gathering plankton and invertebrate samples on the research vessel, studying phytoplankton and zooplankton in the lab, and touring the Huntsman Fundy Discovery Aquarium.

At the end of the afternoon the students boarded the bus to head to the other side of St. Andrews to explore a rocky intertidal zone.  Searching under the rocks and seaweed the students found green crabs, sea stars, and sideswimmers.

After supper the students studied seaweeds in the lab in preparation for the zonation lab today.

Below are some pictures from the day.

Using the microscopes to study plankton.

Drawing diatoms, dinoflagellates, and copepods.

Baleen from a North Atlantic right whale, which eats copepods.

Plankton through the microscope.

Students enjoying the touch tanks during the aquarium tour.

The students got to see Snorkel and his dad, Loki have their lunch.

Students on the Huntsman research vessel, the Fundy Spray.

Sorting through the invertebrates collected from the ocean floor.

The tall, skinny triangle underneath the crab tells us it is a male.

Beautiful brittle stars.

A sea mouse (its a worm)!

What is that!?

Searching for life in the intertidal zone.

One group found a little green crab at Indian Point.
