Shark Advanced Explorer Day

This summer we are offering a new day program at the Huntsman Fundy Discovery Aquarium for Advanced Explorers, those aged 11-15. At the end of the program we open up the lab to the public and the students teach aquarium guests what they've learned. It was a great day of exploration!

Exploring the intertidal zone.

The students found many green crab including this one with eggs.

Looking at the dermal denticles on shark skin with the aid of the microscope.

The many layers of teeth in the shark jaw.

We discussed basking sharks that visit the Bay of Fundy and had a look at some gill rakers.

Skates are relatives of sharks so we spent some time observing and touching the skates.

Skate egg.

Comparing the size of different sharks to a bus.

Teaching about the intertidal animals they found.

Showing the aquarium guests the shark skin and skate egg.

We are looking forward to the remaining Advanced Explorer programs this summer, Microscopic Day, August 17 and Lobster Day, August 24. Other programs we are offering this summer include Young Explorer days for ages 5-11 on August 16 and 23.  And don't forget our program Marine Debris into Art which is being offered August 21 in partnership with Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre. For information on our programs or to register please call 506-529-1245.
