Young Explorer Marine Biology Week 2017

This week at the Huntsman Fundy Discovery Aquarium we had a weeklong marine biology program for ages 5-11. Here are a few pictures from our week of hands-on learning.

Day 1 - Theme: Ocean 

Learning about currents created by temperature.

Making a craft of the intertidal zone.

Is the tide going out or in?

Exploring the intertidal zone.

The students found many rock gunnel fish.

They also found lots of little sea urchins.

Everyone got practice holding crabs.

The students even found a green crab with eggs.

How many pennies can your boat hold?

I think the most was over 60 pennies!

Day 2 - Theme: Marine Debris 

Experimenting to see which plastics float and sink.

Which animals might be affected by floating or sinking plastic debris.

Playing bingo to learn about ways to prevent marine debris.

Looking at the Bow Seat ocean health art gallery.

Making posters to teach people about marine debris.

Beach cleanup.

Using marine debris to create art.

Day 3 - Theme: Seabirds

Day 4 - Theme: Deep Sea

Making deep sea landers.

Testing out the prototypes.

Learning about deep sea species such as the basket star.

Exploring the beach.

We found more green crabs.

Day 5 - Theme: Fish

Making an angler fish craft.

Dissecting herring and mackerel.

Feeding the herring and mackerel to the animals in the touch tank.
