All Things Marine - Summer 2018

This week on campus we had families attending our All Things Marine field course. It has been really fun to work with the multi-generational group to explore life in the bay. Here are a few pictures from the week.

Exploring a rock intertidal zone at low tide.

Everyone collected a few live animals and seaweeds to study in the lab.

Sampling the bottom of the bay aboard the Huntsman research vessel, the Fundy Spray.

Counting the amount of each animal collected.

Looking at the fresh plankton they collected from the bay.

Plankton bingo!

View through the microscope.

Using art to learn about the external anatomy of fish.

What colour is your fish?

What is the name of your fish?

Searching for green crabs, an invasive species.

Data is gathered on the carapace size and gender of each crab.

Behaviour experiments in the lab.

We found this sea stars eating a periwinkle.

Harnessing a sea star to conduct a strength test.

Which echinoderm is the strongest? The sea star was the strongest holding 19x its own weight!
