Glenburnie - Day 3

Yesterday the students walked across the ocean floor to tour Ministers Island, which is only an island when the tide is high.  On the island the students toured the summer estate of Sir William Van Horne, the driving force behind the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway.  The tour consisted of the 50 room house, bathhouse and massive barn.

After lunch the group boarded the catamaran of Quoddy Link Marine to head out on a wildlife cruise.  Even in the fog the group was able to see kittiwakes, eagles, harbour seals, porpoises, and two minke whales!  Seeing whales this early in the season in very rare so we were lucky.

At high tide this 'road' is under 17 feet of water.

The sandy area used to be Sir William Van Horne's saltwater pool.

Covenhoven, the summer home of Van Horne.

Getting ready to board the boat to go whale watching.

There were lots of birds on this offshore island.

Some kittiwakes sitting on nests.

It was chilly on the upper deck.

Lighthouse in the fog.

Everyone keeping up the watch for the whale.

A minke whale.

Yum!  Hot chocolate and cookies on the way back to the wharf!
