Rohan Woods - Day 2

Yesterday the students awoke to a beautiful sunny day.  We started the day in the lab studying the invertebrates that we collected while out on the boat the previous day.  After a break of playing at the touch tank the students joined me in the theatre for a presentation on the whales that visit the Bay of Fundy.  They really enjoyed seeing the porpoise and dolphin teeth and the fin whale rib.  To finish off the presentation we went outside to measure and mark the length of whales such as humpbacks, right whales, and finbacks.  Wow, the whales are so long!

After lunch we boarded a bus and drove through St. Andrews to Indian Point at the end of the peninsula.  Indian Point is a large intertidal zone that is exposed when the tide is low.  We had great fun looking under the rocks and seaweed for crabs, sea stars, urchins, and little fish!  The students were amazed to think that in  hours that whole beach would be covered by water.

To finish off the afternoon we played a Cormorants and Eagles, as well as Right Whales and Copepods in the big field by the residences.

Learning to use a field guide.

Measuring a little hermit crab.

He was given the name "Harold the crab".

Comparing ourselves to a fin whale rib.

Just how big are these whales?

Exploring the intertidal zone.

We found some urchins!

Lots of animals hiding under the rocks.

Checking out all the moulted crabs that had been found.

Searching for animals in the tide pool.

Happy, smiling faces!

Playing Cormorants and Eagles.

Doing a great job guarding her egg.
