Tuesday we welcomed two classes of Grade 6 students from St. George Elementary School as part of our Ocean Discovery program. This program corresponds to the Grade 6 Science curriculum and offers the students a chance to study this subject in a more hands on way. The students were introduced to plankton under the microscope and even played plankton Bingo! They also learnt about classification; the how and why we classify living things. They used various species of invertebrates to discuss how scientists use their similarities and differences for classification purposes. Each class of students also took part in a lecture style presentation on the local lobster as well as an exploration of Brandy Cove to search for various animal and plant specimens.
Students attempt to identify different species of plankton under the microscope.
