Intro to Marine Bio - Day 3

Today was a typical foggy maritime day to start with but now as I write this before supper the sun is shining!  Awesome, because tonight is when the students have the chance to head into town for the evening.

This morning we headed over to Bar Road to dig for marine worms.  This road is only there at low tide and leads to Ministers Island.  We found a great diversity of worms such as blood worms, milky ribbon worms, bamboo worms, and clam worms.  It was quite the surprise to the kids when we explained that some of these worms bite.  What!?

After lunch we headed down to the ARC, a research museum that contains specimens of fish and invertebrates from the North Atlantic. It was pretty cool to see all the different deep sea fish and also the porbeagle shark head.  Some of the kids were even brave enough to kiss the shark!  It was love at first sight!

Then we gathered in the lab to conduct the much anticipated fish dissections.  The students studied the external and internal anatomy of their fish.  We had a chance to look at salmon, herring and mackerel.  Good thing there is not fish for dinner tonight!
