Today we had some fun in the lab to finish off the last day of the Introduction to Marine Biology field course. The students conducted two experiments with sea stars and urchins. One was to see if size affects the flipping rate of the animals and the second was to test the strength of the tube feet. The sea stars were clearly faster than the urchins in the right side up experiment as you can see on the graphs. The data for the other experiment was a bit more scattered but there was one sea star that held 52 times its own weight. Wow, that is amazing!
Just before leaving we cleaned out the tanks in the lab and released all of the animals back into the bay and thanked them for letting us study them this week.
We wish all the students a great summer! Come back and visit again someday!
