Essex Ag-Tech High - Day 2

Today we headed to the beach bright and early to explore a rocky intertidal zone.  We were rewarded with beautiful warm sun and also lots of interesting items under the rocks including sea stars, urchins, sea slugs, green crabs, and scale worms.  While on the beach we collected different species of seaweeds to look at back in the lab for the remainder of the morning.

After a yummy lunch at Anderson House the students had a brief tour of one of the aquaculture facilities on campus that is housing salmon fry.  After that the students worked on invertebrate behaviour experiments in the lab.

This evening the students are headed out on the Almost Amazing Race of St. Andrews to explore the town.  They are currently working out their strategies!

Exploring at Indian Point.

Checking under the rocks.

Found a rock gunnel fish!

Amazing what you can find under one rock on the beach!

Wow, that's some long seaweed!

A green crab collected while on the beach.

Students observed and identified lots of different species
of seaweed collected on our outing.

Touring one of the aquaculture facilities on campus.

Testing the effect of temperature on the feeding rate of barnacles.

Measuring the sea stars to see if diameter affects flipping rates.

An acrobatic sea star!
