Royal West - Day 1

Tuesday evening a big bus rolled onto the Huntsman campus and dropped off 51 of students and their teachers from Royal West Academy in Montreal.  The students spent the night settling in, exploring town and getting some rest in preparation for their first day of study in marine biology.

Yesterday we met the group bright and early at Anderson House and hit the group running.  Throughout the day the students studied plankton in the lab, toured the Huntsman Fundy Discovery Aquarium, went on our research vessel, the Fundy Spray, and completed a classification lab with the marine invertebrates the students had collected while on the boat.

In the evening the students conducted a seaweed lab and then had a campfire back at the residences.  One of the Huntsman staff even brought out his guitar to add to the atmosphere!

Viewing a sample of phytoplankton and zooplankton.

Finishing a biological drawing of a copepod.

Watching a video on tides as part of the aquarium tour.

Students onboard the Fundy Spray arriving back at the wharf.

Viewing plankton collected while on the boat.

Removing the contents of the scallop drag
that were just collected from the bottom.

Checking out what animals were collected including sea urchins,
sea peaches, and scallops.

Snack of the day! Scallop fresh from the ocean!

A cool find, whelk eggs.

Using the salinometer to gather data on the temperature
and salinity of the water at different depths.

Drawing and identifying a blood star.

Working with a finger sponge in the invertebrate classification lab.

Determining the texture of each seaweed for the description.
