Every Tuesday for the month of November we will tour the Huntsman through the eyes of the students that take part in our field courses. Today’s featured location is our research vessel, the Fundy Spray! The Fundy Spray is a 50’ converted lobster boat that can carry 20 passengers and 2 crew. While on board the vessel students usually conduct a plankton tow to sample the microscopic plants and animals living near the surface and a scallop drag to sample the benthic invertebrates. Students also use equipment such as a secchi disk and a salinometer to gather data on the habitat of the organisms they are collecting. Another feature the Fundy Spray offers is an otter trawl for collecting benthic fish. Organisms that are collected while on the research vessel are then studied back at the lab. The trip aboard the Fundy Spray proves to be a highlight for many students and teachers participating in our field courses. Here are some pictures taken by students.
